Ok Mrs Aju has a 1.4% fixed rate savings account completing soon (Sep) and whilst Zopa presents the interest as being paid monthly she does not actually receive this money until the end of the 12 month period. I think that whilst it's presented as monthly interest received she hasn't actually received a penny till it completes so my view from a tax perspective is that the whole interest is taxable only in this period and not when the statements show as having been received starting last October. Am I right or wrong? (PS I'm sure this has been discussed before but could not find where )

đ Itâs âzopa paid interestâ I donât have Z fixed savings, aju. Itâs a bit unfair when the interest paid monthly on your statement, I say. Not sure if itâs worth a complaint if the Ombudsman decides to side with Z. FCA wonât even take a look on their T n C.

You are right to say mrs aju has not received it, but her account has, just not âaccessibleâ yet.

Thanks I struggled with this and think its technically not her interest until the account is fully closed and paid up. So by that definition the interest is received in the tax year Zopa pays the WHOLE amount back her and the account is closed since she cannot use the interest and worse it would reduce the interest she received if she could remove and did so - not by much though!. To be fair she does not pay tax at present so it was more an academic question but she will be next May when she starts receiving UK NSP. I take some of her tax allowance as her hubby at present to limit mine but I just wanted to know what the tax implication might be. If we take a further fix from Zopa - at present we are biding our time to see what other offers there are (Still not sure about play P2P since the downturn) Whilst the rates of interest available are very low at present they are improving - well normal rate, ISA rates seem to end up with lower rate meaning the bank taking the ISA benefit for themselves.

If that is the case then I would be happy as the way they are lining up for her its always going to be split in two periods. I think you are right its possibly a question of how Zopa is reporting the interest earned to the tax office. Is it monthly or at the end of the period.

Terms are not âcomparableâ to mainstream banks IMHO. I am about to get what they mean written on the web.
Everything, fixed, know. đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł

I'm going to give them a poke and see what they say. Just need to get dressed as 'er indoors' is moaning at me that it's nearly dinner time ;-)
Not sure if it's worth it though as at present Virgin are paying higher general rates unless they have changed them too!.

I was going to poke them but thought its only fair i read the current t&c's (No we didn't read them when rates everywhere were lower as she wasn;t going to be paying tax anyway. So here's the item i should have looked at That covers it in my view, I'll take a copy of the whole t&C but i guess the moral of this one is read the manual. As an ex s/w developer I should have known better.

Itâs a win win!
I guess the HMRC tax is also locked under the âfixed termsâ.
Extra money for Z looking after it to keep Z âstableâ. đ

You only need to consider tax on your earnings in the tax year that your Fixed Term account ends. No tax has been deducted by Zopa.â

My only excuse is that I tried to find the 2021, previous statement end, but somehow skipped over it when i went through Mrs aju's final 2020-21 pdf's (Yes i know i keep copies of everything!). Just found it and your are 100% correct. Thanks angel19My excuse for such shoddiness is reading too many newspapers this morning trying to see who won last nights debate. Sadly The Times and The Telegraph are way too biased ...

Well, it's not easy to understand what Zopa offers exactly when their T n C aren't exactly the same of what they said on web site.
It's must be some long wait for those opted for 5 years fixed terms.
Other banks would âpayâ interest on anniversary unlike being stuck in the z âholdingâ account
